Glass is primarily made from abundant and naturally occurring raw materials such as sand, soda ash, limestone, and recycled glass, also known as cullet. The extraction of these materials, combined with energy-intensive manufacturing processes, contributes to its carbon footprint. However, advancements in technology have led to significant improvements in energy efficiency and emissions reduction during glass production. Energy-efficient furnaces, use of clean energy sources, and innovative manufacturing techniques have minimized the environmental impact associated with glass manufacturing.

According to the Glass Packaging Institute, for every 10% of cullet used in the production of new glass containers, energy consumption decreases by 2-3% and carbon dioxide emissions decrease by 5-8%. By incorporating more recycled content, glass packaging can significantly contribute to mitigating climate change and preserving valuable resources.
