Magnesite Burns in Presence of Charcoal to Produce Magnesium Oxide, an Important Industrial Material

Image
Magnesite is a magnesium carbonate mineral with a chemical composition of MgCO3. It is named after the presence of magnesium in its composition. The Magnesite ions have been deposited in alkaline hydrothermal deposits since at least 1800CE. These deposits are located in northern U.S, northern Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay, and California. The deposits contain a variety of minerals including feldspars, cherries, amethyst, black onyx, apatite, and much more. Magnesite occurs as veins in and an alteration product of ultramafic rocks, serpentinite and other magnesium rich rock types. It can be burned in the presence of charcoal to produce magnesium oxide It was believed to be a synvolane that releasing oxygen gas in solution. However, modern analysis has revealed that this occurrence is not true. The modern test methods have revealed that the composition of Magnesite is primarily cryptocrystalline magnesite deposits. In this form, the crystals display features which are not fou...
