In June 2021, Elekta confirmed that its Elekta Harmony Radiation Therapy had received a 510 (k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) in treatment of the arising cancer burden. A linear accelerator is usually used in external beam radiotherapy for patients with solid cancers. When used as a stand-alone machine, it emits high-energy x-rays that destroy cancer cells while leaving healthy tissue unharmed. Using this therapy enables the patient to recover from cancer more quickly. It also allows the physician to keep looking for other symptoms associated with the tumor while the radiation treatment kills the cancerous cells. The three types of linear accelerators are continuous flow, pulse flow and forced-air accelerators. Continuous flow and pulsed-water models work by injecting a stream of water, argon, or xenon into the radiotherapy area.
