Rutile Material Is Widely Being Utilized In Various Applications Including Manufacturing of Optics, And In Paints, Paper, Plastics and Other Products
Rutile |
Rutile is
a mineral that occurs as needle-like crystals in igneous and metamorphic rocks.
It is a titanium oxide mineral that has one of the highest refractive indices
of any known crystal and exhibits a large birefringence. It is often used in
the manufacturing of optics and filters for longer visible and infrared
wavelengths.
It
is also a popular pigment, which is widely used in paints, plastics, paper,
foods, and other products that require a bright white color. Rutile is also widely used in sunscreens to
protect the skin from UV-induced damage. The most common natural form of TiO2
is rutile, however, rarer polymorphs exist, including anatase, akaogiite, and
brookite. The mineral is mined from igneous and metamorphic rocks, especially
plutonic and deep-source igneous rocks.
Many
people find it beautiful and attractive. It can be found in a variety of
colors, including copper red, golden yellow, brown, black, and green. It is
also available in rare blue and violet shades. In jewelry, rutile has been
utilized in the form of synthetic gems. Originally, these were created through
the flame fusion process and had a similar appearance to diamond simulants.
However, their fire was too intense to be believable lookalikes.
Today,
Rutile is being utilized as an aid
in rock and mineral research through Laser Ablation ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled
Plasma-Mass Spectrometry). This technique can identify microscopic inclusions
of rutile that are present within other minerals, which can help scientists
determine the origin of those particular rocks.
Although
rutile is often sold in fine crystals and as gemstones, it is also a common
accessory mineral in igneous and metamorphic rocks. In igneous rocks, it is
often found in plutonic igneous rock formations and in extrusive igneous rock
types such as kimberlites and lamproites. It is often used in stoneware glazes
and can impart fired speckle effects to the surface of glazes during the
cooling process in the kiln. It can also be used to tint other colored glazes
to create variegated glazed surfaces. In August 2022, IperionX Limited, developed
low carbon, high quality titanium mineral enrichment technologies, as they
upgraded ilmenite titanium minerals into a product of high-grade titanium
synthetic rutile.
