Industrially, Acetic Acid Has Been Prepared By Air Oxidation Of Acetaldehyde, Ethanol (Ethyl Alcohol), And Butane And Butene

Acetic Acid

Acetic Acid is a colourless liquid chemical compound. Ethanoic Acid is another name for acetic Acid. Methanol carbonylation produces it. Acetic Acid is widely used as a key intermediate in the production of chemical products such as Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM), and others. Acetic Acid is widely used in the pharmaceutical, rubber, plastics, construction, and paints and coatings industries. Polyvinyl acetate is widely used in a variety of applications, including packaging films, thickeners, and photosensitive coatings. Polyvinyl alcohol is widely used in paints and paper coatings due to its excellent adhesion properties.

Acetic Acid, also known as ethanoic Acid, is an Acidic, colourless liquid and organic compound with the chemical formula CH3COOH (also written as CH3CO2H, C2H4O2, or HC2H3O2). Vinegar contains at least 4% acetic Acid by volume, making it the main component of vinegar other than water and trace elements. Acetic Acid is the second simplest carboxylic Acid (after formic Acid), with the methyl functional group. It is a critical chemical reagent and industrial chemical, primarily used in the manufacture of cellulose acetate for photographic film, polyvinyl acetate for wood glue, and synthetic fibres and fabrics. Diluted acetic Acid is commonly used in household descaling agents.

Acetic Acid is regulated in the food industry under the food additive code E260 as an Acidity regulator and as a condiment. The acetyl group, derived from acetic Acid, is essential to all forms of life in biochemistry. It is essential for carbohydrate and fat metabolism when bound to coenzyme A. The global demand for acetic Acid is approximately 6.5 million metric tonnes per year (t/a), with recycling accounting for approximately 1.5 t/a and methanol accounting for the remainder. Vinegar is mostly dilute acetic Acid, which is often produced through fermentation and subsequent ethanol oxidation.

The IUPAC name that is most commonly used and preferred is "acetic Acid." The systematic name "ethanoic Acid," a valid IUPAC name, is built using substitutive nomenclature. The term "acetic Acid" is derived from the Latin word for vinegar, "acetum," and is related to the word "Acid." The term "glacial acetic Acid" refers to water-free (anhydrous) acetic Acid. The name comes from the ice-like crystals that form slightly below room temperature at 16.6 °C (61.9 °F) (the presence of 0.1% water lowers its melting point by 0.2 °C). It is similar to the German name "Eisessig" ("ice vinegar").
