Furthermore, shifting consumer focus from disease treatment to daily preventive measures to reduce the onset of chronic and lifestyle-related disease is fueling growth. Nutraceutical products are extremely beneficial ingredients because they play a critical role in long-term disease prevention.

The term "nutraceutical" products are regulated in the United States as drugs, food ingredients, and dietary supplements. The term is not defined the same way in every country, but it is typically defined as a product isolated from foods that is generally sold in medicinal forms that are not normally associated with food. A nutraceutical product is a substance that provides physiological benefit or protection against chronic diseases. Nutraceuticals can be used to improve health, slow the ageing process, prevent chronic diseases, extend life, or support the body's structure or function.

Contrary to pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals are substances that do not typically have patent protection. Both pharmaceutical and nutraceutical compounds may be used to treat or prevent disease, but only pharmaceutical compounds are approved by the government. A dietary supplement is a product that contains or bears one or more of the following dietary ingredients: A mineral, a vitamin, an amino acid, a medical herb or other botanical, a dietary substance for human consumption to supplement the diet by increasing total daily intake, or a concentrate, metabolite, constituent, extract, or combinations of these ingredients. Nutraceuticals are nutritional supplements that are used for reasons other than nutrition.

Ginseng, Echinacea, green tea, glucosamine, omega-3, lutein, folic acid, and cod liver oil are some popular nutraceuticals. The vast majority of nutraceuticals have multiple therapeutic properties. Nutraceuticals are gaining popularity due to their potential nutritional, safety, and therapeutic benefits. Recent research has shown that these compounds have promising results in a variety of pathological complications such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), cancer, and neurological disorders. Many changes occur under these conditions, including changes in redox state. The majority of nutraceuticals contain antioxidants that can help to mitigate this situation. As a result, they are regarded as healthy sources of health promotion, particularly for the prevention of potentially fatal diseases such as diabetes, infection, renal, and gastrointestinal disorders.
