These cells release a chemical called fibrin, which is produced when the red blood cells engulf bacteria and viruses that are foreign to the bloodstream. This chimney cell process of accelerated aging is only possible when the fibrin finds a pathway within the kidney tubule. If the pathway is obstructed, there will be no release of fibrin, therefore the cells remain dormant. If the same pathway is blocked, the cells will proliferate and spread throughout the body.

Progeria, sometimes called Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, is a very rare genetic disorder that causes humans to age very quickly. Young children with progeria look quite healthy, however, by the age of two, they appear to have aged too quickly. The syndrome is an extremely rare genetic disorder that shows a characteristic progeria phenotype. In a study published in the Journal of Human Genetics in 2017, four Japanese patients were identified; this was estimated to account for approximately two-third of the prevalence in Japan.
