Hormone Replacement Therapy; a Treatment Used to Relieve Symptoms of Menopause
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), or postmenopausal hormone therapy or menopausal hormone therapy, is a form of hormone therapy used to treat physical symptoms associated with the female menopause, including hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Common treatments include estrogen and progesterone, which are commonly prescribed by physicians. When these two hormones fail to provide a woman with enough estrogen and/or progesterone, she may seek alternative treatment, such as hormone replacement therapy. HRT has been effective in helping women suffering from menopausal symptoms and reduces many of these symptoms.
Hormone Replacement Therapy can be used as a preventative measure to ward off symptoms associated with the menopause such as night sweats and vaginal dryness. However, this form of treatment should not be used as a way to make the symptoms go away. Hormone replacement therapy can actually increase the risks of developing osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and breast cancer. Apart from this, HRT can increase the risk of developing certain cancers that are associated with aging, such as breast cancer and colon cancer. Some evidence suggests that women who use HRT to battle their menopause symptoms may be at higher risk of developing breast cancer later in life.
In addition to these diseases, Hormone Replacement Therapy can also increase a woman's risk of developing heart disease and stroke. Women who wish to use HRT to help them deal with symptoms of the menopause may need hormone replacement therapy according to age. Women who reach the age of 45 years or older may need HRT to help them cope with menopause and osteoporosis. Women who are within this age group may experience an imbalance in their hormones. This imbalance is caused by a drop in estrogen levels. Those with enough estrogen can control the symptoms of the menopause and osteoporosis on their own. However, those without enough estrogen in their bodies, may need hormone replacement therapy.
Hormone treatment or hormone therapy is the application of external hormones to treat diseases and disorders. Hormone treatment involves administration of specific hormones either singly, in combination, or otherwise. Hormone replacement therapy can be used to treat such diverse diseases and disorders, such as breast cancer, ulcerative colitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, osteoporosis, menopausal issues, diabetes, Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Hormone treatment is effective in reducing symptoms and discomfort associated with various diseases. However, there are many side effects of the hormone therapy that patients should be aware of before commencing treatments.
Systemic estrogen therapy remains the most effective treatment for the relief of troublesome menopausal hot flashes and night sweats. Estrogen can ease vaginal symptoms of menopause, such as burning, itching, dryness, and discomfort during intercourse. Hormone replacement therapy is a medication that contains hormones that the woman's body stops producing after menopause. Thus, it is widely used to treat menopausal symptoms. HRT helps to relieve hot flashes and night sweats, sleep better, and ease vaginal itching and dryness. In fact, many experts believe that the benefits of hormone replacement therapy may outweigh the risks.
