High Fructose Corn Syrup; Used In Place of Sucrose in the Food and Beverage Industry
High Fructose Corn Syrup, or glucose-fructose, is a sweetener made from corn starch. It is the common sweetener used in a wide variety of processed and fast foods. This includes soft drinks, processed juice, canned fruit, processed foods, breakfast cereals, biscuits, instant oatmeal, some instant soup mixes, some ready mixes, ketchup and some salad dressings. Compared to regular sugar, it is sweeter and cheaper, and is quickly absorbed into the body. High fructose corn syrup has been identified as a possible factor contributing to the development of obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and other health disorders.
Fructose may contribute to weight gain, depending on the current body weight and size, age, and health history. While the High Fructose Corn Syrup commonly consumed in soft drinks may not contribute to any of these diseases, consuming large amounts of this type of sweetener over a prolonged period of time can contribute to serious diseases. Furthermore, it is true that large amounts of glucose fructose can contribute to diabetes, but it is not true that all glucose-based drinks contribute to diabetes. However, consuming large amounts can significantly increase the amount of insulin required by the body to keep the blood glucose level constant.
This can cause a significant rise in blood pressure and also cause the body to produce excessive amounts of insulin to deal with the high levels of glucose. Thus, zero calorie sweeteners have become very popular among consumers. However, after being recognized as granted generally safe by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), High Fructose Corn Syrup is widely used in the U.S. food industry, mainly because of its benefits over granulated sucrose. Moreover, high fructose corn syrup 42 has emerged as a potential alternative to honey and sugar in food preparation for those who are trying to avoid sucrose due to its side effects.
