Dementia Drugs; Used to Treat the Symptoms of the Most Common Type of Dementia

Dementia Drugs and therapies may help manage symptoms of the condition. However, some causes are reversible. The effectiveness of dementia drugs appears to be modest but significant for a large number of patients who can tolerate their side effects. Memantine (Namenda) and cholinesterase inhibitors are the two most commonly prescribed drugs for dementia. Doctors widely use these medications to treat the symptoms of Alzheimer's, which is the most common kind of dementia. There is an increasing demand for Dementia Drugs in the United States due to increasing prevalence of Alzheimer's in the region.

According to the Alzheimer's Foundation, the number of Americans living with Alzheimer's is growing fast. Over 6 million people in the U.S. of all ages have Alzheimer's. Moreover, around 6.2 million Americans age 65 and older are expected to have Alzheimer's dementia in 2021. Galantamine (Razadyne) is approved for mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease, Rivastigmine (Exelon) is approved for mild to moderate Alzheimer's as well as mild to moderate dementia associated with Parkinson's disease, and Donepezil (Aricept) is approved for the treatment of all stages of Alzheimer's disease.

Dementia Drugs prevent an enzyme from breaking down a substance called acetylcholine in the brain, which helps nerve cells communicate with each other. The aforementioned medications are used to treat the symptoms of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Moreover, getting regular physical activity is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of dementia. It is good for the heart, weight, circulation, and mental wellbeing. Although dementia mainly affects older people, it is not a normal part of ageing. Thus, prevalence of dementia is expected to increase with the growing geriatric population, worldwide.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), by 2050, the world's population aged 60 years and older is expected to total 2 billion, up from 900 million in 2015.
