Construction Aggregates; Used To Strengthen Concrete & Minimize Instances of Cracks

 


Construction Aggregates are the most mined materials in the world. It is coarse -to medium-grained material used widely in the construction. They are available in different forms, such as slag, crushed stone, gravel, sand, geosynthetic aggregates, and recycled concrete. Construction aggregates are basic components of composite materials such as concrete and asphalt concrete. These materials are used as base materials underneath railroads, parking lots, runaway, airports, and highways to increase the strength of composite materials. Aggregates are also used in water filtration, purification, and to control erosion of soil. Aggregate, in building and construction, used for mixing with cement, bitumen, gypsum, or other adhesive to form concrete or mortar.

The aggregate gives volume, stability, resistance to wear or erosion, and other desired physical properties to the finished product. One of the most prominent components of construction aggregates is asphalt. Its wide availability and relatively low price make it very economical and even popular. The increasing popularity of asphalt resulted in its expansion into new applications like roads, bridges, flyways, parking lots, residential complexes, industrial parks, institutional buildings, health care facilities, industrial parks, commercial centers, rail yards, airport terminals, and other public amenities and areas.

Another important Construction Aggregates component is gravel. Gravel is commonly used for street and gravel roads; however, its application is much broader and includes the construction of dams, retaining walls, slabs for foundations, bridges, sewer lines, sewers, reservoirs, canals, lakes, dams, ice dams, foundations, towers, and the like. In fact, gravel is now used as a primary base material for constructing skyscrapers. Other important natural deposits and aggregates are clay, coal, sand, and fine aggregates. Clay is commonly used for construction purposes as it is capable of hardening and durability; however, its high cost and slow availability render it an unsuitable choice for most projects.

Coal and sand are the common choices of fine aggregates due to their cost-effective and rapid availability. However, coal and sand are too fine to construct roads, although they are suitable for foundation applications. Sand is the cheapest available construction aggregates but it is unsuitable for applications requiring high compaction or stress-relief. One of the most interesting uses of construction aggregates is the use as base material for constructing roads and highways. As it is soft and pliable, sand makes the perfect base material for constructing both the internal and external ones. Moreover, its natural color and texture make it the ideal choice for creating landscaping and road bed surfaces.

Moreover, because sand is quite pliable, it can be easily shaped and molded into different shapes and forms depending on the project requirements. Other than roadways, highways, and construction aggregates, the use of natural aggregates in the construction industry has also seen a significant rise. Although mining takes thousands of years to complete, construction aggregates such as sand and gravel can be manufactured in bulk and transported to the job site within a few hours. Moreover, these natural aggregates do not require additional processing treatment and can directly fall into the ground providing an excellent source of fast construction materials. Sand and gravel blocks, especially those mined from natural deposits, are fast becoming the choice for precast concrete blocks and precast Concrete Panels.
