Geocomposites, Consisting of Geonet Bonded With Geotextile Layers, Used as Basal Layer and as Vertical/Chimney Drain

 


Geocomposites are an emerging class of composites. These include a composite of several synthetic materials, usually plastics and polymers. The primary principle behind such composites is to blend the finest qualities of various synthetic materials in such a manner that specific applications are effectively addressed in the most optimal way and at the lowest possible cost. Thus, the ultimate benefit/cost ratio maximization is achieved.

Geocomposites, consisting of a geonet bonded with geotextile layers are used as basal layer (horizontal direction) and as vertical/chimney drain. There are several commercially available types of prefabricated vertical drains in European markets of Germany and the U.K. principally composed of a plastic core surrounded by a geotextile sleeve. Geotextile-geonet composites, geotextile-geomembrane composites, geomembrane-geogrid composites, geotextile-geogrid composites, and geotextile-polymer core composites are various types of these composites.

Geocomposites allow for the development of geotechnical models for civil engineering, geotechnical explorations and for numerical analysis. It is designed to be cost-effective yet highly productive. Geocomposite is used for the manufacturing of precision parts that are made from steel or any other strong, durable metal. It is also used in a variety of other industries, including aerospace, water transportation, chemical industry, and fiber optic manufacturing. Nowadays, geochemists use geocomposites to create products for a wide range of purposes.

In general, Geocomposites have the properties to store chemical energy which makes them an ideal candidate for applications that require dissimilar sized crystals. The main philosophy behind biocomposite materials however, is to blend the best attributes of many other materials in such a manner that certain specialized applications are to address in the most optimal way and at minimal expense. In this way, the geotextile benefit/cost ratio is optimized.
